The Hooks and Needles committee of the Heartland Telecom Pioneers donated more than 1,800 handmade items this year to local senior citizens, expectant mothers, newborns and homeless animals.

Committee members crochet, knit and sew projects year-round. Their handiwork includes hats for premature infants, quilts for children with cancer and lap robes, shawls, walker bags and afghans for elderly residents at local rest homes and rehabilitation centers.

More than 700 mittens, hats and scarves were donated to the Salvation Army's mitten tree project.

Members also made blankets for animals at the Humane Society in Omaha and Council Bluffs.

"We are very proud that all of our beautiful projects have been delivered for the year and are being enjoyed," said Elaine Hobbs, chairwoman.
